Solar-powered Ships Cruise in Taedong River

Solar-powered pleasure boats Okryu 1, 2 and 3 have started service from December 2016 in the picturesque Taedong River meandering through the heart of Pyongyang.

Each 45 ton-class boat, 23m long and 6.5m wide, is designed to accommodate 50 to 60 passengers at a time and can sail at the speed of six knots an hour to the maximum.

Installed in the boats are solar panels with a capacity of 15kW and batteries, which make it possible for them to cruise 8 to 9 hours at a time for their low consumption of power. Equipped with 20kW emergency motors and generators, they guarantee the safety of sailing. Their engines generate little noise and vibration during the cruise. These luxury catamarans with high dynamic stability reduce wave resistance to the maximum.

They render sightseeing tour service along the long courses comprising the May Day Stadium, Okryu Bridge, Mirae Scientists Street, Sci-Tech Complex and other places of Pyongyang.

They shuttle between Kim Il Sung Square and the Tower of the Juche Idea to ease traffic in the rush hours.

The cultural and service facilities in the boats provide every convenience to visitors.
