Rehabilitation Site in Komdok Area of South Hamgyong Province Inspected

Kim Jong Un, Chairman of the Workers’ Party of Korea, Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of the DPRK and Supreme Commander of the armed forces of the DPRK, inspected the rehabilitation site in the Komdok area of South Hamgyong Province.

He was accompanied by Pak Jong Chon, Ri Il Hwan, Kim Yong Su, Jo Yong Won, Hyon Song Wol and Kim Myong Sik.

He arrived there by dangerous gorge railway which was restored temporarily. Commanding officers of the Korean People’s Army greeted him with great excitement.

The Supreme Leader convened the 6th Enlarged Meeting of the 7th Central Military Commission of the WPK just one month ago to issue an order of the Party Central Military Commission to enlist KPA units in the rehabilitation campaign in the Komdok area which suffered severe damage from typhoon and whose conditions were the worst. And he ardently called on the service personnel to make devoted efforts for the great people, for the great Party and for the great State. In hearty response to his noble intention, the soldier-builders turned out as one in the restoration campaign. They waged a 24-7 campaign in the spirit of carrying out the Party’s instructions unto death and of At a Go to fulfil over 60 percent of the total project of building more than 2 300 new houses in the Komdok area.

He said he could see that the damage to the area was more severe than he had thought. He highly appreciated the labour feats of the service personnel who completely removed the serious aftereffects and are vigorously promoting the reconstruction project.

He was greatly satisfied with the construction site seething with the frontline-style information and motivation campaign, the service personnel’s high spirit and the effective on-site political work being conducted across the site.

Looking round the reconstruction site, he highly praised the service personnel for building structures of high quality and doing all parts of construction with sincerity.

Saying that the conscience and unassuming efforts of the service personnel dedicated to the building of dwelling houses will be appreciated and estimated by householders, he stressed the need for the service personnel who are boundlessly faithful to the Party and the people to devote their sincerity to every structure.

He spoke highly of KPA units and sub-units seconded to the recovery campaign in the Komdok area for building firm retaining concrete walls by road stretches and railway sections exposed to potential danger of landslides, and doing river improvement in a qualitative way lest they should be damaged by natural disasters in the future.

He noted that as the service personnel dispatched to the reconstruction sites in different parts of the country to carry out the sacred missions assigned by the Party Central Committee are creating legendary tales and miraculous achievements through fierce struggle, the 75th founding anniversary of the glorious WPK could be celebrated successfully and the square of celebrations could also be glorified more. He extended his gratitude to all the soldier-builders who are giving full play to their gallantry in the reconstruction campaign.

He underlined the need for the entire Party and the whole society to establish a trait of encouraging the struggle of the service personnel taking the lead in the restoration campaign, to send letters inspiring them and to render political and ideological aid to them so as to keep raising their soaring spirit.

He learned about the supply of winter clothes for the service personnel and other supply services and underscored the need to take good care of them as it is getting cold, provide living environments as required by the anti-epidemic work and create the conditions for timely treatment of patients, if any.

He said he was pleased to hear that the residents in the afflicted area could move into new houses by the end of this month, and stressed the need to take thoroughgoing measures to supply food and daily necessities to them and take good care of them as they are living a hard life in public buildings and other people’s houses.

He felt unhappy at the sight of single-storyed houses standing in a haphazard way at the foot of a mountain slope, on his way to the reconstruction site.

He said there still exist the houses built more than half a century ago and that we were absorbed in making a plan to rebuild disaster-stricken houses but did not properly know of the situation of people living in so piteous environments and houses. He went on to say that he felt worried as we could not build new houses for them this time.

He said that we must seriously self-reproach ourselves for making the workers in Komdok live in such a backward living environment because we failed to pay due attention to their living, though we have held that they are the elder brother of the country and that the Komdok area is the major artery of the national economy. He continued that if we shun such living conditions of people in local areas, the Party’s popular policies would be just an empty talk and be just like taking credit to itself, adding that he would feel remorseful if only one thousand-odd flood-damaged houses would be rebuilt.

He said that at present new houses are built only when old ones are pulled down by natural disasters, adding that local construction should not be done this way and, as he said most recently, that the goal for local construction should be set in a planned way and be carried out in a long-term way.

He unfolded a far-reaching plan and blueprint for turning the Komdok area, the country’s leading large-scale mineral production base, into a model mountain city and a mining city next to Samjiyon City by doing away with the centuries-old backwardness in Taehung, Komdok and Ryongyang and building modern dwelling houses suited to the requirement of the new century.

Noting that the current construction for recovery from damage should be set as the first-stage project which must be completed during the  80-day  campaign  with  all-out efforts, he  expressed  his  determination to build 25 000 new houses in the Komdok Mining Complex, Taehung Youth Hero Mine and Ryongyang Mine during the five-year plan to be set forth in the 8th Congress of the Party as the second-stage project.

He gave detailed instructions regarding the direction of construction in the Komdok area, pledging to take charge of the project himself and turn, together with the People’s Army, the mine villages in the Komdok area into a mining city without parallel in the world, a gorge city to be envied by all people.

He said the People’s Army would take full charge of building materials such as cement, steel and oil and build   5 000 houses each year from next year on a yearly basis, not reaching out for help to the national planning institutions which become very calculating, get infected with defeatism to reel off complaints and make a great fuss when the country sets a target worthy of political attention.

He advanced the task for the designing sector to work out a master plan for the construction of the Komdok area during the 80-day campaign period. He stressed the need to conduct field survey before designing, to properly set the site to be free from natural disasters and any inconvenience in living, and design the exterior and interior of houses strictly based on the demands of people.

He suggested making harmonious combination of one-storey houses and several-storey, multi-storey and high-rise apartment buildings in the Komdok area, and called for breaking the outdated style of building clusters of single-storey houses in local counties and mountainous counties and face-lifting the area so as to create another example, a revolution, in local construction.

He stressed the need to properly dredge river-beds and build up embankments and attach importance to improving forest and water conservation so that the area would not be affected by any floods and typhoons in the future.

Noting that he made another decision to conduct a huge task believing in the People’s Army, he added that the grandiose ambition and ideal of the Party would instil fresh confidence and hope in the people across the country and become a spark of the 80-day campaign for opening up the period of a new surge and great turn in the revolution.

The second hand of the clock of the Korean revolution turns keeping pace with the footsteps of the People’s Army and the speed of the latter is precisely the speed of advance of the Korean revolution, he noted, calling on the People’s Army to dash forward keeping step with the attack speed of the Party which never rests content in the work for the good of people and thus bring earlier the future of the country with nothing to desire more.

All the builders were full of strong will to creditably carry out the task for the recovery of the Komdok area and turn it into the example of a mining city which will bring about a great change in the era of the Workers’ Party, and into a place of unprecedented and mythical miracle, in response to the do-or-die attack spirit of Kim Jong Un working heart and soul for the miraculous civilization which will soar from manifold disasters, the spirit which is tantamount to a bold pluck and decision that can be made and put into practice only by him.

The Supreme Leader ardently appealed to the KPA units to make dedicated efforts for our great people, our great Party and our great State.
