Natural Monument—Silicified Wood at Hyanggyo Valley

The silicified wood is located on a mountain slope at Hyanggyo Valley a little away from the township of Kilju County, North Hamgyong Province.

Its geological strata are mainly composed of gray or dark gray sandstone, aleurolite, argillite, carbonaceous sediment and lignite formed in the Neogene of the Cenozoic era.

The wood has the features of conifers, and black-, yellow- and white-coloured annual rings can be seen on the cross section.

The oval wood is 3 metres high with a diameter of 40-50 cm.

It is under preservation as a natural monument as it is of important significance in estimating the ancient ecological environment and studying the ancient geographical and climatic features in those days.
