Efforts for Afforestation.

The DPRK has directed efforts to the creation and conservation of forests in the first half of this year.

Modernization of tree nurseries, production of wild fruit trees and other species and tree planting went full steam ahead. Achievements were also made in preventing damage to forests from pests.

South Phyongan, North Hwanghae, Kangwon provinces and Rason City built labour- and land-saving tree nurseries and produced saplings of good species.

Taesong District in Pyongyang built a sapling greenhouse last year and an outdoor adaption ground and, this year, rebuilt outdoor cultivation ground and established an integrated production system this year.

Millions of trees have been planted in the mountains around the Yangdok Hot Spring Resort, and wild fruit trees and oil-bearing trees in different parts of the country.

Riwon County in South Hamgyong Province over-fulfilled the plan for producing different species of saplings and expanded the area of grafted pine-nut trees.

Renovation of the Central Tree Nursery under the Ministry of Land and Environment Protection, construction of the Academy of Forestry and establishment of a system of surveying and analyzing forest resources, and pest control in the forests of the Mt Paektu area and Yonsa County have been promoted.
